EXTRA SCIENCE

As we work to heal the earth, the earth heals us. -Robin Wall Kimmerer, author

More to come on this page!  For now here are some extra science lessons that did not fit into the other categories.  Do you have a scinece lesson to share please email (email below) it so I can potentially share it on this site.  Let's grow the community of outdoor educators!

Primary - The Five Senses

Have students sit quietly in a circle, preferably on the ground or on their sit spots (as opposed to a bench).  Have students use their senses to observe what might be alive near the circle.  Discuss.  Did they see a squirrel? Hear a bird? If we smell or touch a tree will that help us discover if it is alive?Teach through guided discussion characteristics of living things: reproduce, grow, eat, respire or breathe, respond to stimuli, and adapt to the environment. Return to their observations, does a squirrel have these characteristics etc.  Remember please teach the lesson per your students. Primary students might not need to understand respond to stimuli etc.  Upper grades might delve into how does a tree respond to stimuli?Assessment: Have students draw a living thing.  If possible, have students list why it is giving, It moves, breathes, etc.  This part of the unit can be repeated each time this unit is taught. As students learn about the topic the observations and discussion will get richer.

Grade 4 Sound
